Age requirements
WAVOA is rated 12+ on the App Store and PEGI 7 on Google Play. Concretely:
- Under 13: we don't knowingly create accounts for users under 13. The app works without an account in “guest mode” — forecasts only, no favourites, no alerts.
- 13–15 (EU): a verifiable parental consent step is required before we activate the account.
- 13–17 (rest of world): account activates immediately, with a reduced data set (see below).
- 16+ (EU) and 18+ (rest of world): standard account.
Parental consent
For users under 16 in the EU, we use the following verifiable-consent flow, designed to satisfy GDPR Article 8:
- The minor signs up and reaches a “we need your parent's OK” screen.
- They enter a parent or guardian's email address.
- We email the parent a one-time link.
- The parent confirms — and pays a refundable €0.50 charge as proof of adult control of a payment method, refunded immediately. (Per CNIL guidance, this is the lightest currently-acceptable signal.)
- The minor's account activates with reduced data collection.
Parents can revoke consent and trigger account deletion at any time by replying to the original email or via the contact form.
What we collect from minors
For accounts known to belong to a user under 16 (EU) or 18 (RoW), we strip back the data set:
- Email address and display name only.
- Favourite spots and alert rules — same as adult accounts.
- No anonymous analytics events, even with consent — we suppress them server-side.
- No personalised recommendations using session history.
- No custom-spot names appear in shared / public listings.
Features we disable for minors
- Public spot reviews and check-ins.
- Crew sharing with adults outside the parent's confirmed Crew.
- Push notifications between 22:00 and 07:00 local time, by default.
- In-app upgrade prompts beyond a single, dismissible banner.
For parents
If your child has a WAVOA account and you want to:
- See what we hold — use the data-export form from the address that gave consent. We send the export within 7 days.
- Correct anything — same form, same response time.
- Delete the account — same form. We honour it within 7 days, no questions.
- Withdraw consent without deleting — we move the account into “guest mode” until the user turns 16.
COPPA (USA)
WAVOA is not directed at children under 13 in the USA, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If we learn we've inadvertently collected such information, we delete it within 7 days. Parents who believe their under-13 child has signed up despite our age gate should use the contact formwith “COPPA” in the subject — we'll act within 24 hours.
GDPR-K (EU)
For EU users, GDPR Article 8 sets the digital age of consent at 16, with member states free to lower it to 13. WAVOA applies 16 across the entire EU/EEA, even where the local rule is lower — it's the strictest, simplest line we can hold.
Where French law and ePrivacy rules require, we don't set non-essential cookies for minors regardless of any consent banner. Plausible analytics is suppressed server-side for accounts known to be under 16.
